1984 riots: Hearing in the case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar completed

The Uncut

New Delhi. A Delhi court on Thursday concluded the hearing in an alleged murder case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja directed the prosecution and Kumar’s lawyers to file documents in support of their arguments by November 8.

This case pertains to the alleged murder of Sardar Jaswant Singh and his son Sardar Tarun Deep Singh. At present, Kumar, who is serving life imprisonment in another case of 1984 riots, is lodged in Tihar Central Jail and he appeared in the court through video-conference. The court had earlier framed charges against Kumar after finding a ‘prima facie’ case against him.

According to the prosecution, a huge mob armed with deadly weapons indulged in large-scale looting, arson or destruction of Sikh property to avenge the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The prosecution alleged that the mob attacked the house of the complainant (Jaswant’s wife), killed her husband and son, looted goods and set her house on fire. The court’s order prosecuting Kumar found ‘sufficient material to form a prima facie opinion that he was not only a participant but was also leading the mob.’
