We are not against e-commerce companies: Goyal

The Uncut

Mumbai. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said India is not against e-commerce companies but wants them to be fair and honest. A day after raising concerns about e-commerce companies, Goyal said those doing business online need to be ensured a “fair opportunity” to compete.

Goyal on Wednesday raised concerns about the market-distorting pricing of e-commerce companies and the impact their operations would have on small retailers in the country. He also expressed his apprehensions publicly and warned of ‘huge social disruption’ with the massive growth of the e-commerce sector.

Goyal said at an event here, “We are very clear that we want to bring FDI (foreign direct investment), we want to invite technology, we want the best of the world and we are not at all against online.” He said, “The country always wants that there should be fair treatment towards the customers, honesty should be maintained, there should be honesty towards the suppliers of goods and services and it should be ensured that others also get a fair opportunity to compete against such online business.” Goyal said that there are ‘huge advantages’ like speed and convenience in the e-commerce sector. Goyal clarified that the government wants such companies to serve the people of the country.
