Dantewada: Chhattisgarh Police has said that 38 Naxalites were killed in an encounter on October 4 on the border of Naxal-affected Dantewada-Narayanpur district of the state. Police officials said on Friday that security forces had recovered bodies of 31 Naxalites after the encounter and Maoists admitted that seven other Naxalites were also killed in the encounter. He said that all 38 Naxalites killed in the encounter have been identified and they collectively had a reward of Rs 2.62 crore. On October 4, security forces had recovered bodies of 31 Naxalites and a cache of weapons after an encounter in the Abujhmad area in the forest between Thulathuli and Nendur villages on the border of Narayanpur-Dantewada district. A joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) was involved in this operation.

Dantewada district Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai said on Friday that the East Bastar Division of the banned CPI (Maoist) has confirmed in a press release that seven more Naxalites were killed in the encounter and that they were taking away the bodies during the exchange of fire. Rai said that with this confession, a total of 38 Naxalites killed in the encounter have been identified. Of these, Neeti alias Urmila was a woman member of Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) and was carrying a reward of Rs 25 lakh.

He said that four members of DKSZC were killed in encounters with security personnel in the state this year. Nandu Mandavi, who was the commander of the Maoists’ Western Bastar division, was also among the dead. There was a reward of Rs 10 lakh on him.

The police officer said that of the remaining killed cadres, 22 had a reward of Rs 8 lakh each, nine had a reward of Rs 5 lakh each and three had a reward of Rs 2 lakh each. The killed Naxalites were involved in 61 incidents of encounter with police, 11 incidents of attack on police camps, 17 incidents of landmine blasts, nine incidents of arson and three incidents of polling booth attacks, the official said. Rai said that out of 31 bodies recovered by the security personnel after the encounter, 29 bodies have been handed over to their relatives.
