Wayanad. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the UDF alliance candidate from Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, on Wednesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leader Narendra Modi are trying to destroy the values of equality, justice and secularism of the Constitution. Priyanka claimed that in the last 10 years of BJP rule, the country has seen politics of division where the ruling party tried to divert people’s attention from their real problems to remain in power.
Addressing a street meeting at Cherukode in Vandoor assembly in Malappuram district, Priyanka said that when such people become powerful in politics, they do not focus on solving the problems faced by people in their everyday lives.
Later, addressing street meetings in Thuvur and Kalikavu towns of Vandoor assembly constituency, Priyanka alleged that Modi is a leader who disregards the people who elected him, but uses them to remain in power.
He said, “He is a leader who spreads mistrust and fear among the communities and the public so that he can remain in power for a long time by dividing the people. He ignores the needs of the people. Their only objective is to remain in power by any means.” Priyanka also accused Modi of selling public sector undertakings (PSUs) to his ‘businessman friends’, waiving off loans worth Rs 16 lakh crore of big businesses and giving very little assistance to farmers and small and medium enterprises.
He said that small and medium industries are the backbone of the country’s economy and provide a large number of employment, but they need support just like farmers.
The Congress leader, on the fourth day of his five-day campaign for the by-election in Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, alleged that there is no support system for farmers or medium and small enterprises in the country under the BJP rule. Criticizing the methods that create fear and distrust among communities, he said that they should have no place in Indian politics.
The Congress General Secretary said that high quality agricultural products like spices are produced in Wayanad, but farmers do not see any future in farming. He said that students and other people go abroad in search of better employment opportunities and higher education. He also raised issues like drinking water, education and health facilities.
Priyanka Gandhi said that she is a ‘warrior’ and if she gets a chance, she will fight for the people of Wayanad in Parliament and every other platform so that their issues can be resolved. She said, “I will not back down.” I will fight for you. I will not let you down. Now we are a family.” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is contesting elections for the first time in her political career, will remain in Kerala till November 7. Voting for Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election will be held on November 13. The by-election for the Wayanad seat became necessary because Rahul Gandhi, who had won the Lok Sabha elections from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli, decided to leave the Wayanad seat.
