Will take Interpol’s help in bringing back the mastermind of the murder of Bangladesh MP

The Uncut

Dhaka. Bangladesh will seek Interpol’s help to bring back the fugitive “main conspirator” in the murder of Awami League MP Anwarul Azim Anar, a top official said here on Sunday. Last week, Anar was found dead in Kolkata. Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s detective branch chief Mohammad Harun Ur Rashid made the remarks while talking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday just before leaving for Kolkata to investigate the murder case.

Anar, a three-time MP from Jhinaidah-4 constituency in Bangladesh and head of the Kaliganj sub-district unit of the ruling party Awami League, left Dhaka for treatment on May 12. He went missing in Kolkata the next day. According to the Kolkata Police, circumstantial evidence indicates that the MP was first strangled and then his body was cut into pieces and thrown in various areas, which are yet to be recovered.

Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Harun said, “We will seek help from Interpol to bring back Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen, the fugitive main conspirator of Jhinaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar murder case.” Harun also said that an application will be made through the Inspector General of Police to bring back Shaheen, a childhood friend of the MP. He said that the detective branch team will first go to the crime scene in Kolkata and they will interrogate Jihad, who has been arrested in India in connection with the murder.

A Bangladesh court on Friday sent three suspects to eight-day police custody for their alleged involvement in Anar’s murder. The West Bengal police claimed to have arrested a Bangladeshi working as a butcher in Mumbai from North 24 Parganas district for his alleged involvement in the gruesome murder.

Meanwhile, West Bengal CID officials on Saturday claimed that gold smuggling could be a possible motive for the murder. Investigators claimed that an alleged rift between Anar and his friend, a US citizen and his business partner, over gold smuggling could be the reason for the crime.
