Jammu. A soldier died after being shot at an army camp in Jammu on Monday. A defense spokesperson gave this information. The spokesperson denied any terrorist angle in the incident. Earlier, an alert was issued after the incident and a massive search operation was launched in the area.

According to officials, Naik Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Punjab, was on sentry duty at the Sunjwan military camp on the outskirts of Jammu when he was shot in the head and was taken to a hospital where he died. A defense spokesperson said, “Preliminary investigation of the Indian Army suggests that the incident in which a soldier lost his life this morning is not a terrorist attack. The incident is being investigated.” Sources said that preliminary investigation indicates that the soldier has committed suicide.

Earlier, a Defence Ministry spokesperson had said that at around 10:50 am, some bullets were fired at the Sunjwan military station located on the outskirts of Jammu and a soldier was seriously injured in the incident. He said that a search operation has been started and further information is being gathered. Fearing a terrorist attack, a ‘Special Operation Group’ of the local police along with other teams reached the spot to help the army in the extensive search operation.

However, nothing suspicious was found during the search operation. The search operation continued for several hours and all entry and exit routes of the surrounding areas were blocked. Drones and sniffer dogs were also used during the intensive search of the area. In February 2018, terrorists attacked the Sunjwan military camp in which six soldiers were martyred. One civilian also died in this and three terrorists were killed.

Speaking to reporters at the spot on Monday, Superintendent of Police (South) Ajay Sharma had said that two gunshots were heard at a post, in which a soldier was injured. He said, “Investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the firing. Senior officers are at the spot.”
