Arjun Lifetime Achievement Award will replace Dhyanchand Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Uncut

New Delhi. In an effort to ‘rationalise’ the country’s various sporting honours, the Sports Ministry on Thursday announced the discontinuance of the Dhyanchand Award for Lifetime Achievement from this year and the introduction of the Arjuna Lifetime Award in its place.

Dhyan Chand Lifetime Award, established in 2002 in the name of great hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, is given to players participating in sports like Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games etc. In the year 2023, this award was given to former badminton player Manjusha Kanwar, former hockey player Vineet Kumar and Kabaddi player Kavita Selvaraj.

The ministry said in a statement, “Various schemes for sports awards have been rationalized in which Arjuna Award (Life Time Achievement) has been introduced in place of Dhyanchand Award. “He is now eligible for the Dronacharya Award in recognition of the coach’s efforts at the grassroots/development level.”

According to the statement, “Arjuna Award (Life Time Achievement) has been instituted and will be given for lifetime contribution to sports development.” It said, “Apart from this, to recognize the Khelo India scheme, the Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Trophy will be given to the university for overall top performance in the Khelo India University Games.” The last date to apply for National Sports Awards for the year 2024 is 14 November.
