Jagdalpur. A case has been registered against senior Congress MLA and Lok Sabha candidate Kawasi Lakhma in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh for allegedly violating the model code of conduct. Police officials gave this information on Tuesday.
Police officials said that based on the complaint of the District Election Officer, an FIR was registered against Lakhma and another party leader Sushil Maurya on Monday.

Lakhma, who represents Konta assembly constituency of Sukma district and was a minister in the previous Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel, has been fielded by the party from Bastar Lok Sabha seat. Maurya is the president of Bastar district unit of Congress. Police officials said that as per the complaint by the election officer, Lakhma had gone to Maa Danteshwari temple in Jagdalpur city on March 24, a day after announcing his candidature. During this time, Lakhma was allegedly captured on camera distributing cash to people outside the temple.

He said that the District Election Officer took cognizance of the complaints in this regard and lodged a complaint. Police officials said that a case has been registered against Lakhma and Maurya under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The case is being investigated. Congress has termed the action against Lakhma as a conspiracy by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Sushil Anand Shukla, head of the communication branch of Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee, said, “This is a conspiracy of the BJP. BJP has gone berserk. Lakhma is a public leader and has a good hold on the people in Bastar region. As soon as he was fielded from Bastar Lok Sabha seat, BJP started plotting and the latest step (registering primaries) is part of the same conspiracy. We will fight against such steps of BJP.”
