Bengal government should produce documents related to arrests of people in connection with ‘Nabanna’ march: High Court

The Uncut

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday asked the West Bengal government to produce all documents related to the arrest of four persons in connection with the march to the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ on August 27 to protest the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Hospital.

The court questioned the rationale behind their arrest and release after 24 hours and asked whether the police had followed proper procedures in detaining them. The government told the court that the Howrah city police had arrested them as a precautionary measure as the police feared that these people could cause serious disturbance during the protest march to ‘Nabanna’ under the banner of West Bengal Students Society. Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj asked what kind of disturbance was feared and why these people were released before the protest march on August 27.

The court directed the state government to submit all relevant documents related to the arrests by Tuesday. Petitioners’ counsel Rajdeep Majumdar alleged that the arrests were illegal. He said he was seeking an order from the court for compensation and action against those responsible for detaining the four persons.
