Kolkata. Junior doctors from various medical colleges of Kolkata took out a rally to the police headquarters Lalbazar on Monday demanding the resignation of Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. The junior doctors have accused the police of inaction in preventing the vandalism that took place in the medical college and hospital on August 14 by submitting an RG.
The agitating doctors were stopped earlier by barricades erected on B.B. Ganguly Marg leading to Lalbazar.
These doctors said that their rally was peaceful and their representatives wanted to meet the Police Commissioner. They demanded that the rally be allowed to proceed towards the Police Headquarters. They said that they were stopped much before Lalbazar. After being stopped, the protesting doctors sat on the road and started raising slogans. The protesters were carrying a replica of the spinal cord and red roses. They said that these were to emphasize the duty of the police to protect the citizens.
They also carried the national flag and placards with slogans written on them. These placards demanded justice and security for everyone, including doctors. Some placards had Goyal’s picture below which slogans demanding his resignation were written. The protesters also burnt the effigy of the police commissioner. The protesting doctors also raised slogans demanding harsh punishment for the culprits who allegedly raped and murdered a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The doctors also accused the police of taking inadequate steps during the investigation of the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9. After this, on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, the investigation of this case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 13. A large number of policemen were deployed in the area and barricades were put up to prevent the rally from reaching the police headquarters.
