New Delhi: A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs met President Draupadi Murmu on Friday and demanded dismissal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi, citing an alleged “constitutional crisis” in the wake of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s imprisonment.
Attacking the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused it of having no respect for the Constitution and accepting defeat even before elections are held in the national capital. The delegation led by Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta submitted a memorandum to the President and formally appealed to him to immediately intervene in the ongoing constitutional crisis in Delhi and expressed concern over the functioning of the AAP government.
The memorandum said that the AAP government has lost the moral right to rule. Gupta said that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been in jail for more than four months on serious corruption charges. He said, “Kejriwal has refused to resign, which has created a strange situation.
There is a complete breakdown of governance in Delhi. Important administrative decisions are being delayed and essential services are being badly affected, which is directly affecting the lives of the citizens of Delhi.” The memorandum submitted to the President accused the AAP government of ”significant constitutional violations”.
The memorandum also mentioned alleged corruption in the government and obstruction of various welfare schemes of the Centre in Delhi. It said, “In view of these constitutional violations and failures of governance, we, the members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, humbly request you to take cognizance of this matter and dismiss the Delhi Government.”
Attacking the BJP, the AAP said that wherever the BJP does not win the elections, it tries to run a “parallel government” with the sole aim of obstructing the functioning of the elected state government.
In a statement, the AAP said, “BJP’s move to approach the President of India to dismiss the Arvind Kejriwal government shows that they have accepted defeat even before the Delhi Assembly elections.”
