New York: India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden entered the second round of the men’s doubles of the US Open tennis tournament by defeating Sander Arends and Robin Haas of the Netherlands in straight sets. Bopanna and Ebden won 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round match that lasted 64 minutes on Thursday night.
This Indian and Australian pair entered the US Open after losing their last three matches but they performed well here. Bopanna and Ebden had to struggle initially and lost their serve in the third game. However, they soon made a comeback and won four consecutive games by breaking the Dutch pair’s serve twice.
They faced a similar challenge in the second set as well. Bopanna and Ebden were trailing initially but they managed to equalise the score at 5-5. After this, they broke the Dutch pair’s serve once again and won the match.
Reigning Australian Open champions and second seeds Bopanna and Ebden will face unseeded pair of Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena and Argentina’s Federico Coria in the second round.
