Britain misses out on Davis Cup last eight spot after losing to Canada

Manchester: Britain failed to reach the last eight of the Davis Cup Finals after losing 2-1 to Canada in their final group match while Novak Djokovic’s superb performance helped Serbia secure a place in next year’s qualifiers.

Britain needed a 2-1 win over Canada but Denis Shapovalov ended their hopes by beating Dan Evans 6-0, 7-5. Felix Auger Aliassime then beat Jack Draper 7-6, 7-5. England won the last doubles match.

Canada and Argentina advanced to the next round from Group D. Finland was also eliminated. Spain defeated Australia 2-1 in Group B in Valencia. Both teams have reached the last eight while France and Czech Republic were eliminated.

Netherlands qualified despite losing 1-2 to Italy in Group A in Bologna. Italy has also reached the last eight while Brazil and Belgium were eliminated. Chile defeated Slovakia in Group C in Zhuhai, China. USA and Germany have qualified.

At the same time, in the World Group One match in Belgrade, Serbia defeated Greece 3-1 with the help of Djokovic. Olympic champion Djokovic defeated Hamad M 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
