Chhattisgarh requests Center to include Raigarh district in NCAP

The Uncut

New Delhi. Chhattisgarh has requested the Center to include Raigarh district of the state in the National Clean Air Program (NCAP). This information was received from official records. During the meeting of ‘National Apex Committee’ under NCAP, Principal Secretary of Environment Department of Chhattisgarh R. Sangeeta also requested to include Raigarh in the program due to “increasing pollution levels”.

In July, the Center approved a coal mining project in Raigad district, only to have its environmental clearance canceled by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) six months later. The carrying capacity and cumulative impact assessment conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Patna found that sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide pollution levels in Raigarh are within safe limits, but particulate matter (PM) levels are within safe limits for industrial areas. Approaching the acceptable maximum level.

India launched NCAP in 2019, with the goal of reducing PM pollution by 20-30 percent by 2024 compared to 2017 levels. Later the government amended it and set a target of reducing it by 40 percent from the level of 2019-20 by 2026.
