Ranchi: Amid incessant rains in Jharkhand, the Meteorological Department on Monday issued an ‘Orange Alert’, forecasting heavy to very heavy rains in some parts of the state. The local Meteorological Department has predicted relief from the incessant rains in Jharkhand for the last two days in the next 48 hours.
Heavy rains washed away several culverts on Sunday, mainly in Garhwa and Latehar districts. Farmers said the rains, accompanied by strong winds, also damaged standing paddy crops in many areas.
On Sunday, the highest rainfall of 152.8 mm was recorded in Meral of Garhwa district. After this, 112.2 mm rain was recorded in Budhmu area of Ranchi and more than 110 mm rain was recorded in Daltonganj. Abhishek Anand, in-charge of Ranchi Meteorological Center, said, “An ‘Orange Alert’ of heavy to very heavy rain has been issued for northwestern parts including Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Latehar and other districts on Monday.” He urged people living especially in low-lying areas of northwestern areas to remain alert.
Anand said this weather system is slowly moving westwards and is likely to cross Jharkhand in the next 24 hours. “Widespread rainfall is expected on Monday. The rainfall will reduce on Tuesday. Light to moderate rainfall is likely in some parts of Jharkhand on Tuesday,” he said. Jharkhand recorded 822.2 mm rainfall from June 1 to September 15, while it usually receives 920.8 mm rainfall during this season. There was an 11 per cent decrease in rainfall during this period.
