Delhi Lieutenant Governor approves prosecution of Arundhati Roy under UAPA

New Delhi. Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena has given his approval to prosecute author Arundhati Roy and a former professor from Kashmir under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at an event here in 2010, Raj Niwas officials said on Friday. Officials said the FIR was registered against Roy and former professor of Kashmir Central University Sheikh Shaukat Hussain following an order of the Metropolitan Magistrate, New Delhi Court. There was no immediate reaction from Roy and Hussain.

In this case, an FIR was registered on October 28, 2010 on the complaint of Sushil Pandit, a social worker from Kashmir.
“Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has given approval to prosecute Arundhati Roy and Dr Sheikh Shaukat Hussain, former professor of international law at the Central University of Kashmir, under Section 45 (1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act,” a Raj Niwas official said on Friday.

Roy and Hussain had allegedly delivered provocative speeches at a conference held under the banner of ‘Azadi – The Only Way’ at the LTG Auditorium on Copernicus Marg here on October 21, 2010. “The issues discussed and debated at the conference promoted the separation of Kashmir from India,” the official said.
