Chandigarh: Dera Sachcha Sauda chief and rape case convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh came out of Haryana’s Rohtak jail on Wednesday after getting 20 days parole. During his temporary release period, Singh will be staying at the Dera Ashram in Barnawa, Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.

An official said he came out of jail this morning amid tight security. The Haryana government has allowed Singh parole for 20 days, during which he has been barred from taking part in election-related activities, giving speeches and staying in the state.

Singh is serving a 20-year jail sentence for raping two of his female students in 2017. The Dera chief and three others were also convicted in 2019 in the murder of a journalist more than 16 years ago.

He had requested for 20 days parole before the Haryana Assembly elections to be held on October 5.
As per the conditions of parole, the Dera chief will not take part in any election related activity nor make any public speech. During this period he will remain out of Haryana.

The Dera chief had said that if parole is granted, he wants to live in Baghpat. The jail department had recently sent the parole petition of the Dera chief to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Haryana in view of the model code of conduct applicable for the assembly elections. Elections are to be held in Haryana on October 5 and the results will be declared on October 8.
