Durg. Police have registered a case against a stand-up comedian for using abusive language during his show at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai located in Durg district of Chhattisgarh. Giving this information on Tuesday, the police said that students, their parents and professors and officials of the institute were present in the show held on November 15.
Durg District Superintendent of Police Jitendra Shukla said that after some organizations and IIT management complained against comedian Yash Rathi, a case has been registered under Section 296 (obscene acts) of the Indian Justice Code at Jewra Sirsa police post on Monday. He told that the matter is being investigated. A clip of Rathi’s presentation during the annual function organized by the student council at IIT Bhilai has surfaced on social media, in which he can be heard using abusive language.
After the video went viral, some organizations including Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), National Students Union of India and Karni Sena had lodged a complaint in this regard with the IIT management, administration and police. Later the IIT management also lodged a police complaint in this regard. IIT Bhilai Director Professor Rajeev Prakash said that when Rathi started using abusive language during his show, the management stopped him and asked him to get down from the stage.
Prakash told that standup comedy has been organized earlier also during the annual festival of the institute, but the artists never used such language. He said, “We were shocked when Rathi used such language.” Prakash told that now the management has decided that standup comedy will never be organized in the institute. He said that the management has lodged a police complaint against Rathi.
