Every drop of water is precious: President Murmu

The Uncut

New Delhi. Emphasising the need for water conservation, President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday said every drop of water is as precious as a pearl and should be used judiciously. Addressing the inaugural session of the 8th India Water Week Summit, the President also underlined the importance of groundwater replenishment through plantation.

He said, “We should increase the groundwater level by planting trees. Every tree planted in the name of every mother will be a tribute to her legacy.” Murmu said, “Drop by drop an ocean is formed, so it is everyone’s responsibility to save water.” The President also spoke on the need for community participation in water management for a sustainable future. Referring to the efforts made by the government through Jal Jeevan Mission, he said that significant changes have been brought about especially since 2021, when campaigns started to overcome water shortage at the local level. Murmu referred to the limited availability of clean water globally. Only 2.5 percent of the world’s water is clean and only one percent is available for human use. He said that this harsh reality underlines the need for awareness and conservation efforts.

Murmu said, “Awareness about water is very important. We have to ensure that everyone, especially women and girls, are made aware about conservation.” She said that the role of women in water management and community development is important to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking about the need to take collective steps, Murmu said, “Water conservation cannot be achieved by efforts alone. Every citizen should play his role in the effort to conserve this precious resource.” He hoped that the discussions at the summit will encourage all participants to work actively towards water conservation.
