Raipur. Advanced Cardiac Institute Raipur has achieved great success in the treatment of complex heart diseases. Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of the Department of Cardiology at the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI) located at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, affiliated to Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Hospital, and the team treated a 70-year-old female patient through Transcatheter Mitral Valve Implant (TMVR) Valve in Valve procedure. Saved life. With this procedure ACI became the first and only institute in the entire state of Chhattisgarh to complete the mitral valve replacement procedure without any incision on the patient's chest. According to Dr. Smit Srivastava, the mitral valve was implanted through the patient's thigh vein in a process similar to placing stents in heart veins in angioplasty. The patient has been fitted with a 26 mm mitral valve.

Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai and Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal have congratulated and congratulated the entire team of Advanced Cardiac Institute for this achievement. Advanced Cardiac Institute, affiliated to Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital, the largest government hospital of Chhattisgarh, is establishing its new identity in the successful treatment of complex heart diseases. Let us tell you that the patient was suffering from severe mitral regurgitation (MR), which is a common heart disease, which usually requires open heart surgery. The patient underwent the non-invasive procedure at the Department of Cardiology, Advanced Cardiac Institute on 6 February 2024 and will be safely discharged after just two days.

Dr. Smit Srivastava, professor and head of the department of cardiology at ACI, said, “The elderly patient had undergone multiple operations for heart attack and valve disease 10 years ago, including coronary bypass surgery and mitral valve surgery, which She had deteriorated over the past decade, leaving behind a severely leaky mitral valve and a very weak heart. Apart from the patient's advancing age and weak heart, she was also suffering from life-threatening severe asthma, which was causing difficulty in breathing. She also suffered from a rare autoimmune blood disorder called immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). This is an immune system disorder that causes increased bleeding by preventing blood from clotting properly. Repeat open heart surgery was impossible in such a complex patient, so Dr. Smit Srivastava tried to minimize the risk by avoiding any incisions on the weak chest wall.”

This is how the procedure was done

First of all the patient was made unconscious and then through the veins of the right thigh he reached the aorta through a catheter. Moving the balloon through the aorta created space for the mitral valve. The balloon expandable valve was then implanted in place of the old valve.

What is TMVR valve-in-valve therapy?

According to Dr. Smit Srivastava, TMVR (Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement) valve-in-valve therapy is a state-of-the-art procedure. It is designed for patients who have previously undergone mitral valve surgery but are now experiencing valve failure. Instead of any other open-heart surgery, this technique allows valve implantation within the implanted valve through a catheter. The procedure involves inserting a catheter through a vein in the leg and reaching the heart, where a new valve is placed within the damaged surgical valve.

Thanks to the dedicated team of ACI, my mother-in-law is fine today.

Sharing his experience after successful Transcatheter Mitral Valve Implant (TMVR) procedure in ACI despite having various types of problems and complications, a 70 year old patient says that today his heart problem has been successfully resolved because of Dr. Smit Srivastava and team. Treatment took place. Seeing the success of the case here, I happily got myself treated without any fear. The result of that is that today I am absolutely fine in front of all of you. According to the patient's daughter-in-law Deepti, ACI is introducing new technologies in the field of treatment of heart diseases, which can save lives. Transcatheter mitral valve implantation, especially for the highest risk patients, is made possible by a dedicated team. With new technologies, unprecedented innovations and unparalleled talent, the team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anaesthetists, medicine specialists and imaging technologists are working towards improving health care.
