Former AAP state president Komal Hupendi joins BJP

Raipur. Komal Hupendi, who was the state president of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Chhattisgarh, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. Hupendi, who was angry with the party, had resigned from his post and primary membership of the party in the month of January. Hupendi joined the ruling party in the presence of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai during a program in the state's Kanker district on Tuesday.

BJP officials said that along with Hupendi, a large number of his supporters also joined the BJP. Hupendi pledged to make party candidate Bhojraj Nag win from Kanker Lok Sabha seat. Hupendi had contested the assembly elections held in the state last year on AAP ticket from Bhanupratappur seat in Kanker district. He had secured 15,255 votes in this election. He finished third, facing defeat from this constituency for the second time in a row. In the month of January this year, a large number of leaders of AAP's Chhattisgarh unit had joined BJP.

Hupendi, who comes from the tribal community, left the government job of Cooperative Extension Officer in 2016 and joined AAP.
When AAP tried its luck for the first time in the Chhattisgarh assembly elections in 2018, the party had presented Hupendi as the chief ministerial candidate. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party failed to perform well in the Chhattisgarh assembly elections twice in 2018 and 2023.
