Gagan Narang will be India’s mission chief in Paris Olympics, Sindhu will be the women’s flag bearer

The Uncut

New Delhi. London Olympics bronze medallist shooter Gagan Narang on Monday replaced boxer Mary Kom as India’s chief of mission for the Paris Olympics. Veteran badminton player PV Sindhu will be India’s women’s flag bearer in the opening ceremony of the Paris Games. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha said that after Mary Kom’s resignation, it was an obvious choice to make Deputy Mission Chief Narang the chief of mission.

Usha said in the release, “I was looking for an Olympic medalist to lead my team and my young teammate Mary Kom is a perfect replacement.” PTI had earlier reported that Narang is in the race to become the mission leader of the Indian team.
Usha said, “I am also happy to announce that PV Sindhu, India’s only female player to win two Olympic medals, will be the female flag bearer along with table tennis player A Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony.”

He said, “I am confident that our players are well prepared to give the best result for India in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.” Six-time world champion Mary Kom resigned from the post in April, saying that she had no other option due to personal reasons.

The mission chief is an important administrative position. The mission chief takes care of the needs of the players and also acts as a liaison with the organizing committee. Sindhu will be India’s flag bearer along with table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony. The IOC changed the protocol in 2020 to allow one female and one male player from a country to jointly become flag bearers. Mary Kom and Indian hockey captain Manpreet Singh were the flag bearers at the Tokyo Olympics.
