Panaji. A police constable and a lifeguard were arrested for allegedly trying to kidnap a one-and-a-half-year-old boy for ransom in Pernem in North Goa, an official said on Sunday. Constable Nikesh Chari, attached to the Indian Reserve Battalion of the state police, and lifeguard Sanjay Narvekar of Drishti Marine were arrested from Kargaon village on Saturday, Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi said.
Dalvi said, “On Friday night, when the child was playing in the gallery of his house, Chari and Narvekar tried to kidnap him. Both of them arrived on a two-wheeler and Chari picked up the child. However, the child’s grandfather raised an alarm, which brought the neighbours to the spot. They caught Chari, but Narvekar managed to escape.”
Dalvi said, “Narvekar, a resident of Vengurla in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, was later taken into custody. The accused have been charged with kidnapping and other crimes under the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and Goa Children Act. The accused have told us that they had the intention of extorting money from the child’s parents.”
