There is a large section of women, who work as sales girls in all types of shops. A sales girl has to stand for eight to ten hours every day in her job. In many institutions or shops they are not allowed to sit for the whole day. Because of this, women have to struggle with many physical and mental problems.

A movement that started with the demand of women working in big showrooms of Kerala for the right to sit during work has taken a big form today. Maya Devi, who worked in a similar famous showroom, lost her job when she asked her bosses for the right to sit for some time during work. Maya Devi says, ‘We did not even have toilet facilities at the workplace. I used to drink very little water throughout the day. I always had pain in my legs. Was suffering from urinary infection. Apart from this, he started having many health related problems. After being fired from her job four years ago, she became part of the ‘Right to Sit’ movement to fight for her rights and that of other saleswomen like her. The leader of this movement, P.Viji, is a tailor by profession. According to the news published in a leading newspaper, the women working as saleswomen are less educated and belong to the poor class and are not aware of their rights and labor laws. P. Viji herself faced a lot of terror while working and decided that she would get her fellow workers their rights. He believes that during work, when there are no customers in the shop or showroom, the sales girls should be allowed to sit for some time. Not only this, there should also be provision for toilets for women at the workplace. The Right to Sit movement, which started from Kerala, has now spread to other states and its impact is also visible.
