Hosting Olympic Games a wasteful project: Karti Chidambaram

The Uncut

New Delhi. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on Tuesday said hosting the Olympic Games is a “waste project” and the country should learn from the bitter experiences of Athens and Rio de Janeiro. He also said that it is better to invest in the training of Indian athletes and win a respectable number of medals in the next few events.

Karti made this comment at a time when the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has submitted a letter of intent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressing the country’s willingness to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036. This is the first major step taken towards organizing the games.

Karthi posted on ‘X’, “Which city is the one who is bidding? This is a useless project. “We should not aim to organize the Olympics.” The MP from Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu said, “We should learn from the bitter experiences and consequences of Athens and Rio. It is better to invest in the training of our athletes and win a respectable number of medals in the next few events.” Athens (Greece) hosted the Olympics in 2004, while Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) hosted these games in 2016. Both Athens and Rio reportedly faced financial difficulties after hosting the Olympic Games. Karti had also spoken in Parliament against the attempt to bid for the Olympics in the year 2022.
