I am in a dilemma whether to leave Wayanad or Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat: Rahul Gandhi

The Uncut

Malappuram/Wayanad. Rahul Gandhi, who won two Lok Sabha seats (Wayanad and Rae Bareli) in the 2024 general elections, on Wednesday left people speculating as to which seat he would retain. However, Congress’ Kerala unit chief K. Sudhakaran indicated that the Congress leader would leave the Wayanad seat.

According to the Representation of People Act, a candidate can contest from two Lok Sabha constituencies but can represent only one constituency at a time. Hence, the Congress leader will have to give up one of the two seats he has won. Addressing a public meeting at Edavanna in Malappuram earlier in the day, Gandhi said he was in a dilemma as to which of the Wayanad and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats he should give up.

He said that whatever decision he takes, the people of both the constituencies will be happy with it. He thanked the people of Wayanad for electing him for a second term in the Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, at a public meeting in Kalpetta in the state’s Wayanad district, where Gandhi was present, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K. Sudhakaran indicated that the Congress leader may leave the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. He said, “We should not be sad because Rahul Gandhi, who is expected to lead the country, cannot be expected to remain in Wayanad.

Sudhakaran said, “So, we should not be sad. Everyone should understand this and give him all their best wishes and support.” During his speech, Gandhi said that many people are speculating which Lok Sabha seat he will leave, Rae Bareli or Wayanad. He said, “Everyone knows the answer to this except me.” Earlier in the day in Edavanna, Gandhi said that he was in a dilemma about leaving any one seat.

The Congress leader said in a public meeting here, “I hope to meet you soon. I am in a dilemma whether I should remain the MP of Wayanad or Rae Bareli. I hope both Wayanad and Rae Bareli will be happy with my decision.” He reiterated the same thing while addressing the people in Kalpetta. This is his first visit to the state after winning the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat for the second consecutive time with a huge margin.

Gandhi took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that he does not get any instructions from God on what to do, as the Prime Minister claims about himself. Mocking Modi, the Congress leader said that God has instructed the Prime Minister to hand over the country’s major airports and power plants to Adani and then God instructs him (Modi) to bring the “Agniveer” scheme to help the industrialist in the defense sector.

Gandhi said, “Unfortunately, I do not have this facility because I am a human being and God does not order me. For me, it is very simple. My God is the poor people of India. My God is the people of Wayanad.” He also said that the battle of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was to protect the Constitution of India and in that battle, hatred has been defeated by love, arrogance by humility. He said that on one side there are millions of Indians who want to preserve their different traditions, languages, cultures and history and they will decide their future. Gandhi claimed that on the other side are the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who said that they will decide which languages should be spoken and which traditions should be followed. The Lok Sabha MP said that there was a “basic misunderstanding” on the part of the Prime Minister and Shah.

Gandhi said, “They (Prime Minister and Shah) thought that they have political power, they have Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Income Tax Department, so they can instruct people what is going to happen.” He said, “The people of Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and all other states have shown the Prime Minister that you cannot tell us what we want. The people of India told him that the Constitution is our voice. Do not touch the Constitution.” Gandhi said that the truth is that the Prime Minister narrowly escaped defeat in Varanasi and the BJP lost in Ayodhya.

He said, “The people of Ayodhya also gave a message to the BJP that we do not like hatred and violence. The biggest message that the people of India gave was that we have many traditions, states, religions and history and each of them will be respected.” The Congress leader said that therefore Prime Minister Modi will now have to change his attitude because the people of India have given him a clear message. He described the government formed at the Center as ‘crippled’ and said that the opposition has given a befitting reply to the BJP. Gandhi also said that Prime Minister Modi will now have to change his attitude because the people of India have given him a clear message.
