The Uncut

Indian fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah, who performed brilliantly in the T20 World Cup, beat captain Rohit Sharma and won the ICC’s best player award for the month of June. Rohit not only left behind Rohit but also Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz in this matter. Whereas, in the women’s category, Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana emerged as the winner.

Had a strong performance in T20 World Cup
Bumrah took 15 wickets in the recently concluded T20 World Cup and was named the Player of the Tournament. The 30-year-old bowler performed brilliantly in the global tournament and bowled at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17. India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup title without losing a single match in the tournament. India’s group stage match against Canada was washed out due to rain, but the Rohit Sharma-led team won all eight matches.

“This is a special achievement for me.”
Bumrah was quoted by ICC as saying, “I am overwhelmed to win the ICC Player of the Month award for June. This is a special achievement for me after memorable days in America and West Indies. As a team we have a lot to celebrate and I am very happy with this personal achievement. Performing and winning the trophy is very special and I will always remember this moment. I also congratulate my captain Rohit Sharma and Gurbaz for their excellent performance during this time. I am happy that I was chosen as the winner.

Mandhana won the award for the first time
This is Mandhana’s first Player of the Month award. She performed brilliantly in the ODI series against South Africa last month and scored two centuries and a half-century in three matches. Mandhana left behind England’s Maia Bouchier and Sri Lanka’s Vishmi Gunaratne in this race. Mandhana scored 117 runs in the first ODI against South Africa. Apart from this, she scored another consecutive century in the second match and scored 136 runs in 120 balls. Mandhana was also moving towards a century in the third match, but was out after scoring 90 runs. During this, Mandhana scored 343 runs at a strike rate of more than 100.
Mandhana said, I am proud to win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for June. I am very happy with the way the team performed and my contribution to it. We won the ODI and Test series and I hope that we will continue this momentum and I will continue to contribute to India’s victory.
