New Delhi. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday suspended the membership of Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The move comes amid a CBI probe into the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the Kolkata-based institution earlier this month. The decision to suspend the membership of Ghosh, vice-president of the association’s Kolkata branch, was taken by the IMA’s disciplinary committee.
In an order, the IMA said that the committee constituted by the organisation’s national president Dr R V Ashokan on Wednesday took suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder case of the postgraduate resident doctor and the subsequent developments at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
It said the IMA general secretary, along with Ashokan, had met the parents of the deceased doctor at their home.
“They have lodged their grievances against you (Ghosh) in handling the situation, as well as your lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in a proper manner commensurate with your responsibility in your dealings with them,” the order said. “The IMA Bengal state branch as well as some associations of doctors have also sought action against you citing the nature of defaming the entire profession,” it added.
The order said that the IMA’s disciplinary committee “has unanimously decided to suspend you from the membership of the Indian Medical Association with immediate effect.” Earlier, in a letter to the IMA, the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) had expressed concern over Ghosh’s association with the organisation and demanded that his membership be cancelled.
