India is expected to receive above normal rainfall in September. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over northwest India and adjoining areas. Addressing a press conference, IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra said that the country is expected to receive above normal rainfall in September, which is 109 per cent of the long period average of 167.9 mm.
Heavy rains are expected in these states
After receiving above normal rainfall in August, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the month of September as well over Northwest region including Uttarakhand, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh.
Less than normal rain is expected in these areas
The IMD chief said most parts of India are likely to receive above normal rainfall, except some areas over northwest India, many parts of the southern peninsula, north Bihar and northeastern Uttar Pradesh as well as most parts of northeast India, which are expected to receive below normal rainfall.
During this time, the monsoon low pressure area is expected to remain in its normal position, with many low pressure systems likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal, which may move west-northwestwards up to Rajasthan. Mohapatra said that the low pressure area may also move towards the foothills of the Himalayas, and there is a possibility of western disturbances affecting the region in September.
16% more rain than normal in the month of August
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the country has received more than normal rainfall in the month of August. According to the IMD, the country has received more than 16 percent rainfall in the month of August, while North-West India recorded 253.9 mm of rain, which is the second highest rainfall in August since 2001. IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra said that the country recorded 287.1 mm of rain in August, while the normal rainfall is 248.1 mm. Overall, India has received 749 mm of rain against the normal 701 mm since the beginning of the monsoon season on June 1.
