Jharkhand elections: JMM releases second list, Rajya Sabha member Mahua Maji will contest from Ranchi

The Uncut

Ranchi. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Wednesday released its second list for the state assembly elections, in which Rajya Sabha member Mahua Maji has been made the candidate from Ranchi seat. Maji was elected unopposed to the Upper House of Parliament in June 2022. She has been the chairperson of Jharkhand State Women Commission. She has also been the head of JMM’s women’s wing. He had contested elections from Ranchi Assembly seat in 2014 and 2019, but he was defeated.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main constituent of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has made CP Singh its candidate from Ranchi seat. Singh had defeated Maji on this seat in the 2019 elections by a margin of 5,904 votes. Whereas, in 2014, Singh defeated Maji by a margin of 58,863 votes.

Meanwhile, sources said that there is resentment among Congress, a constituent party of the ‘India’ alliance, over the fielding of JMM’s candidate on this seat.
Earlier, when Maji’s name was announced as the Rajya Sabha candidate in 2022, the Congress had said that “there is a contradiction between what was discussed in Delhi and the decision taken by JMM.” In Jharkhand, JMM has an alliance with Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Earlier in the day, JMM released its first list of 35 candidates in which Chief Minister Hemant Soren has been fielded from Barhait and his wife Kalpana Soren from Gandey. Assembly elections will be held in two phases, on 13 and 20 November and counting of votes will take place on 23 November.
