New Delhi. With her film ‘Emergency’ not getting a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and its scheduled release on September 6 in limbo, actress Kangana Ranaut on Monday said that it is very disappointing and unjust that censorship is only for her film. Kangana said that there is censorship only on those who make films on historical facts but violence and nudity can be shown.
Comparing ‘Emergency’ and the Netflix web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’, he wrote on ‘X’, “It is the law of the country that extreme violence and nudity can be shown on OTT platforms without any action or censorship, one can also distort real life events for their politically motivated malicious purpose, communists or leftists all over the world have the freedom to express such anti-nationals.”
He said, “But as a nationalist, no OTT platform allows us to make a film that revolves around the integrity and unity of India. It seems that there is censorship only for some of us who do not want the division of this country and make films on historical facts. This is very disappointing and unjust.” A controversy has arisen over the alleged showing of the names of the hijackers as ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’ in Anubhav Sinha’s series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’, based on the 1999 incident of Kandahar plane hijacking.
Kangana also spoke on the issue of censorship in Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast and said that an ’emergency’ has been imposed on her film.
She said, “This is a very disappointing situation. I am very disappointed with the situation in my country. How much will we be intimidated? I have made this film with a lot of self-respect, that is why CBFC cannot point to any controversy. They have stopped my certificate, but I am determined to release the uncut version of the film. I will fight in court and get the film released without cuts.” A source said that the film ‘Emergency’ will not be screened this Friday because the filmmakers have not yet received a certificate from the censor board.
The source told PTI, “Even though they (CBFC) have put the U/A certificate on their website, the producers have not yet received a copy of the certificate. Every day they are being asked to make a new cut in the film, which they are doing due to some pressure. Kangana is fighting for the purity of the film.” The Madhya Pradesh High Court will hear on Monday a request by a Sikh organization to ban the release of the film ‘Emergency’.
Kangana, who has acted in the film as well as written-directed and co-produced it, said last week that her film is still stuck with the censor board despite rumours that it has been approved for release. She said that there is pressure on her not to depict the incident of Indira Gandhi’s assassination by her bodyguards in the film. Shiromani Akali Dal on Friday sent a legal notice to the CBFC demanding a ban on the release of Kangana Ranaut’s film. The party claims that the film can ‘incite communal tension’ and ‘spread misinformation’.
