National Commission for Women initiates legal action against Mahua Moitra for ‘indecent’ remarks

The Uncut

New Delhi. The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday said it has initiated legal action against Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra for making comments against commission chairperson Rekha Sharma. The commission has taken this stand a day after the TMC MP commented on a video posted on ‘X’. The video showed the NCW chairperson arriving at the site of the stampede in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, commenting on which Mahua Moitra wrote, “She (Rekha Sharma) is too busy handling her boss’s pajamas.”

In a statement, the NCW said that a formal complaint has been filed with the Delhi Police and a letter has been sent to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in Parliament, stating that Moitra’s remarks were reprehensible and unbecoming of her position as an MP.

Reacting to this, Moitra took a dig at the NCW and posted on ‘X’, “Delhi Police come, please act on these suo motu orders immediately. If you need me to make quick arrests in the next three days, I am in Nadia.” In a letter to Birla, the NCW requested that the Lok Sabha Speaker investigate the matter and take appropriate action against Moitra. The NCW said that this ‘indecent’ comment is not only insulting, but it violates a woman’s right to live with dignity.

In the order given to Delhi Police, the NCW said that after thorough deliberations, it was found that the comment falls under Section 79 of the Indian Justice Code, 2023. The NCW said that it strongly condemns the derogatory remarks and wants strict action against Moitra. The NCW wrote, “An FIR should be registered against Moitra and a detailed action report should be informed to the Commission within three days.”

BJP targets Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra for remarks about NCW chief

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday hit out at Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra for her comments about National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma, demanding her “expulsion” from the party. Moitra had commented on a video posted on ‘X’ in which the NCW chief is seen arriving at the spot after the recent stampede in Hathras in Uttar Pradesh.

On this video, Mahua wrote, “He (Sharma) is very busy handling his boss’s pajamas.” BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala reacted sharply, calling Moitra’s comment “extremely indecent, objectionable and shameful” and said that this is the “real face” of the TMC and the alliance of opposition parties ‘India’.

He alleged, “MP Mahua Moitra, who remained silent on the Sandeshkhali, Chopra Talibani beating case and Swati Maliwal case, is now making indecent comments about a woman, that too on the NCW chief.” Sharing the photo of Moitra’s comment about the NCW chief, the BJP spokesperson demanded her expulsion from the TMC.

The BJP spokesperson also attacked the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over the TMC MP’s remarks and asked, “Will Priyanka Vadra, Rahul Gandhi, (Mallikarjun) Kharge ji, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Aam Aadmi Party raise their voice on this?” He said, “Will Mamata Didi take action on this? No, she was similarly silent on Sandeshkhali and (West Bengal’s) Chopda (couple being flogged).”
