NHRC issues notice to Kolkata Police chief over use of ‘brutal force’ during protest

The Uncut

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Kolkata Police Commissioner for allegedly using excessive and brutal force on August 27 against protesters demanding justice for the victim of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case.

The NHRC has sought an action taken report from the police commissioner in two weeks. The notice was issued on Thursday following a complaint by O P Vyas of the Indian Human Rights Initiative. In his complaint, Vyas has alleged that during a protest organised by students in Kolkata on August 27 demanding justice in the RG Kar Medical College case, the police “used excessive and brutal force” on the protesters during a peaceful demonstration.

Looking into the complaint, the NHRC said that if the allegations are true, it raises a serious issue of violation of the right to peaceful assembly.
