Dubai: Outgoing head of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) Alex Marshall said that top-level cricket is safe and clean but potential corruptors are eyeing to infiltrate the game through T20 leagues run by local cricket bodies.
The former British police officer did not say whether he was referring to a particular local league or country. Marshall told ESPN Cricinfo, “I can say with full confidence that the cricket you are watching is safe and clean.”
He said, “But I am also saying with full confidence that the corrupt are looking for a way to enter this game. They are trying to infiltrate through the lower level franchise league. The danger for the game is that the corrupt will not go away, because their only aim is to earn money and for this they will try to enter through the weak link of the entire system. ”
Marshall said that he is happy that more and more players are reporting corrupt offers with the ICC ACU, which is helping to keep the game clean and clear. He said, “I am proud that the number of players reporting corrupt offers has increased significantly. There was a time when they did not trust in maintaining confidentiality and the action that would follow.”
