Wayanad: The recent landslide in Wayanad district of Kerala has shaken the entire state. So far more than 340 people have died in this disaster and hundreds have become homeless. People are still being rescued from the debris.
Relief and rescue operations are going on on a war footing. The Wayanad district administration has now admitted that they failed to take the necessary proactive steps to prevent this terrible tragedy.
The terrible tragedy of landslides
Due to the landslide, people of many villages were buried under the rubble and many houses were completely destroyed. This disaster has had a devastating effect in the entire district, disrupting life. Wayanad, which is famous for its natural beauty and greenery, has now become a symbol of destruction and misery.

The district administration has admitted that they failed to take timely action which could have averted this tragedy. The District Magistrate said, “We admit that we failed to take timely action and this led to this terrible situation.”
Relief and rehabilitation
The government and various non-governmental organisations are engaged in relief work. The affected people have been kept in temporary camps and are being provided food, water and medical facilities. The state government has announced compensation to the families of the deceased and plans are also being made for rehabilitation. The Wayanad landslide has not only taken away hundreds of lives but has also exposed the failure of the administration.
