Kolkata. Film director Aparna Sen and several other prominent personalities of the Bengali film industry on Sunday joined thousands of people in a massive rally demanding justice for a local trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Hospital here last month.
Apart from Mahamichhil, two other rallies were held elsewhere in the city. One rally was organised by alumni of educational institutions run by the Ramakrishna Mission, while the other rally comprised students and alumni of a renowned convent school, both demanding justice for the doctor. In this massive rally that started from College Square, Sen along with Swastika Mukherjee, Sudipta Chakraborty, Chaiti Ghoshal, Sohini Sarkar and other fellow artists marched to Central Avenue and demanded justice for the postgraduate trainee doctor.
When asked by reporters, actor-turned-director Aparna said, “We are walking on the road together demanding justice. If needed, I will take to the streets again.” She said, “Common people have the right to demand answers and know the truth. Deep pain comes from the depth of our hearts. But we have faith in the judiciary and we are hopeful about the investigation.” Swastika Mukherjee expressed concern and said, “So many days have passed since the August 9 incident. After one arrest, we have not received any further information from the investigating agency. The initial attempt by the hospital administration to dismiss this death as a suicide and the arrest of only one person has forced the people of this state to come out of their homes. We have all come together to demand justice.” A forum of junior doctors, who have been protesting since the RG Kar incident, also joined the rally.
In south Kolkata, alumni of Ramakrishna Mission schools and other educational institutions took out a march from Golpark to Rabindra Sadan Exide Crossing carrying banners with the message ‘Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya (Lead me from darkness to light)’ and demanded a fair probe and arrest of all those involved in the crime.
In another rally, around 300 alumni of St John’s Diocesan Girls’ Higher Secondary School, along with current students and parents, marched from Minto Park to the school campus and then formed a human chain near Exide Crossing on AJC Bose Road. They also displayed symbolic images of the spine with the slogan ‘Our spine is not for sale’ at the rally. Trinamool Congress (TMC) women members staged protests in various blocks, advocating amendments in laws to ensure death penalty for rapists. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been staging a dharna at Dorina Crossing in Esplanade since August 29.
