Security of Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi beefed up: Police

New Delhi. Delhi Police has increased the security of the Bangladesh High Commission here in view of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation from the post of Prime Minister and the imminent formation of an interim government in the neighboring country. An official said that if Hasina lands in the national capital Delhi, security has also been tightened outside the Indira Gandhi International Airport in view of that. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from the post and now the interim government will take over. Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman made this announcement on Monday. There are unconfirmed reports that she (Hasina) has left for some city in India.

A Delhi Police official said, “More barricades have been put up outside the High Commission and the number of police personnel deployed there has been increased.” A source said several senior police officers, including New Delhi District Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahala, reached the High Commission to review the security arrangements.

More than 100 people have died in anti-government protests in Bangladesh since Sunday. The protesters are demanding the abolition of the controversial reservation system, under which there is a provision to give 30 percent reservation in government jobs to the relatives of the fighters who took part in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
