Mumbai: The Maharashtra Cabinet on Sunday approved the Central Government’s Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). During the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, it was decided to implement UPS for state government employees. Thus, Maharashtra has become the first state to implement UPS.
The cabinet has also approved the Nar-Par-Girna river linking project. This project will cost Rs 7,000 crore. The Integrated Pension Scheme was approved by the Modi government on Saturday. Opposition parties were demanding the re-implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
There are 13.45 lakh government employees in Maharashtra
The central government had implemented the New Pension Scheme (NPS) in place of OPS in 2004. Maharashtra has 13.45 lakh state government employees. Of these, 8.27 lakh employees are currently covered under NPS. The Integrated Pension Scheme will be implemented for those employees who are currently covered under NPS.
