New Delhi. Indian player Tanvi Patri won the girls’ singles title in the Under-15 category at the Badminton Asia Under-17 & Under-15 Junior Championships after defeating Vietnam’s Thi Thu Huyen Nguyen in straight games in the final played in Chengdu, China on Sunday.
Top seeded 13-year-old Tanvi defeated her second seeded opponent 22-20 21-11 in the final that lasted 34 minutes.
With this win, Tanvi joined the list of Samia Imad Farooqi and Tasnim Mir, who won the Under-15 girls’ singles title in 2017 and 2019 respectively. Tanvi maintained her dominance throughout the tournament and did not lose a single game in the five matches she played. In the first game of the final, Tanvi was at one point trailing 11-17, but after that the Vietnamese player made many mistakes, taking advantage of which the Indian player was successful in winning the first game. Tanvi did not give any chance to her opponent in the second game and won the match and won the gold medal. In this way, India won one gold and one bronze medal in this competition. Gyan Dattu TT won the bronze medal in the boys’ singles event in the Under-17 category on Saturday.
Badminton Association of India (BAI) Secretary General Sanjay Mishra said in a release, “Tanvi Patri’s title win at the Badminton Asia Championship and Gyan Duttu’s bronze medal in the Under-17 men’s singles category have once again proved that India has a strong talent pool.” He said, “Our strong and highly competitive domestic circuit is playing an important role in preparing our top players for such major international competitions. I am confident that in the coming times we will see not only Tanvi and Gyan but also other Indian junior players winning many titles.”
