The condition of women in Bengal is deteriorating, central schemes are not implemented: Minister

The Uncut

New Delhi: Amid massive protests over the rape and murder of a doctor in West Bengal, Union Minister Annapurna Devi has said the condition of women in the state is “deteriorating” despite having a woman chief minister.

He criticised the West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for failing to implement central government schemes like setting up of fast-track courts and emergency helplines to deal with crimes against women.

Women and Child Development Minister Devi told PTI that it is ironic that West Bengal is the only state in the country whose chief minister is a woman but still the condition of women in the state is deteriorating.

Devi said, “There are states like West Bengal where we are trying to implement the central government’s schemes, but it is not happening. The central government has many schemes to deal with crimes against women and children, like fast track special courts and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) courts, but the state (West Bengal) is lagging behind in this.”
