New Delhi. Referring to a film made on the 2002 Godhra train fire incident in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the fake discussion can be carried forward only for some time. At the time of the said incident he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Modi made this comment while reacting to a user’s post. The post praised the film ‘Sabarmati Report’, saying that it “brings to light the important truth about one of the most shameful events in our recent history.” The user also raised other points, claiming that the incident of “passengers being brutally burnt” in the Sabarmati Express train was turned into a political game by vested interest groups. In an apparent reference to Modi, he said that an attempt was made to tarnish the image of ‘a leader’.
The Prime Minister said, “Rightly said.” It is a good thing that this truth is coming out and that too in such a way that common people can see it.” The Muslim mob was accused of setting fire to the train carrying a large number of pilgrims from Ayodhya. At the same time, other sections called it just an accident. More than 50 passengers were killed in this fire, after which communal riots broke out in Gujarat.
The inquiry committee formed by Lalu Prasad when he was Railway Minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Center had supported the theory of the accident. However, several accused in the train fire case were convicted by the courts, confirming the state police’s claim.
