Thane: A man and a child were killed when a huge boulder fell on an auto-rickshaw following a landslide triggered by heavy rains at Malshej Ghat in Maharashtra’s Thane district. A woman was injured in the mishap, a police official said on Wednesday.

He said the incident took place on the Kalyan-Ahmednagar highway on Tuesday evening, affecting traffic on the route for some time. Tokavade police station inspector Dinkar Chakor told PTI that five members of a family were travelling in an auto-rickshaw from Mulund in neighbouring Mumbai to Sangamner in Ahmednagar district when a stone weighing 15-20 kg fell on the vehicle.

Rahul Baban Bhalerao (30) and his nephew Sachin Bhalerao (7) died in the accident, Lahu Tathe, assistant police inspector at Otur police station in neighbouring Pune district, said.

Another official said that a 55-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in the accident. On receiving the information, police and rescue teams reached the spot and took the bodies in their custody. They have been sent to the hospital for post-mortem.

An accidental death case was registered at the Otur police station. It would later be transferred to Tokawade police station in Murbad as the incident occurred under its jurisdiction, Thathe said.
