New Delhi. Umesh Vikram won the gold medal in the SL3 event at the Indonesia Para Badminton International Tournament here on Sunday while Sukant Kadam, Sivarajan Solaimalai and Mandeep Kaur won silver medals in their events. Sukant won the silver medal in the men’s singles SL4 event while Sivarajan won the silver medal in the men’s singles SH6 category. Mandeep got the silver medal in the women’s singles SL3 category.
India performed brilliantly in Sarakarta, Indonesia and won 34 medals in the International Level 2 tournament. In men’s singles SL3, Umesh defeated compatriot and top seed Nehal Gupta 12-21 21-8 21-19 in the final. Sukant missed out on a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics after losing to Indonesia’s Freddy Setiawan in the playoffs and he again lost to the Indonesian 14-21 14-21 in the SL4 final here.
Sivarajan lost to top seed Indonesian Subhan Subhan 19-21 15-21 in the SH6 final. Mandeep Kaur had to settle for the silver medal after losing to top seed Indonesian Konitah Ikhtiar Sayakuroh 10-21 5-21 in the SL3 final. The Indian team performed well in the tournament, but Umesh was the only player to win the gold medal in singles. Jagdish Dilli won the bronze medal in the same category.
