Winter Olympics: France to host 2030 and the US to host 2034

The Uncut

Paris. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday decided to award the 2030 Winter Olympic Games to the French Alps and the 2034 Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City in the US. France has been given the hosting rights on the basis of certain conditions. French President Emmanuel Macron assured the IOC that any government formed after the 2024 Summer Olympic Games are over will fulfill all the conditions related to the event. These have not been signed yet.

After the formation of the new government in France, whoever becomes the Prime Minister will have to sign these conditions. The IOC has set a deadline of October 1 for this. The IOC members accepted their assurance and voted in favor of handing over the hosting to France. 84 members voted in favor of France hosting while four members voted against it. Seven members did not participate in the voting.

Macron said, “We thank you for showing trust in us. We will fully honor our commitments.” France was the only country to bid to host these games. France has previously hosted the Winter Olympic Games three times in 1924, 1968 and 1992.

The IOC members then approved Salt Lake City’s bid to host the 2034 Winter Games. Salt Lake City will host these games after a gap of 32 years. Earlier, it hosted the Winter Olympic Games for the first time in 2002.

Last year, the IOC granted Salt Lake City exclusive negotiating rights to strengthen its bid, leaving Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah, as the only city left in the race to host. Those bidding on behalf of Salt Lake City included Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and alpine ski great Lindsey Vonn.
