Boxing World Qualifiers: Ankushita wins, Abhimanyu loses

Bangkok. Former world youth champion Ankushita Boro defeated Namuun Monkhor of Mongolia in the 60kg category of the second boxing world qualifier for the Paris Olympics here on Monday but Abhimanyu Lora lost to Ireland’s Kellyn Cassidy in the 80kg category. Ankushita started strongly against her Mongolian opponent and won by a split decision of 4-1 after three rounds.

National Championship bronze medallist Abhimanyu had defeated 10-time national champion Kristian Nikolov of Bulgaria in the first round but Cassidy was well prepared for the match and managed to win 5-0 despite Abhimanyu giving his all in the final round. On Tuesday, Sachin Siwach (57 kg), Abhinash Jamwal (63.5 kg) and Nishant Dev (71 kg) will take part in their quest for an Olympic quota.

Sachin will face Frederik Jensen of Denmark, Jamwal will face Jose Manuel Viafara Fori of Colombia and Nishant will face Otgonbaatar Bayamba Erden of Mongolia. India has already secured three quotas for the Paris Games. Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50 kg), Preeti (54 kg) and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg) have already secured quotas for the Paris Games by winning bronze medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.
