Dhoni should remain CSK captain as long as he plays IPL: De Villiers

The Uncut

New Delhi. AB de Villiers believes that if World Cup-winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni decides to play in another season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), then he should take over the responsibility of captaining Chennai Super Kings. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has won five titles under the leadership of Dhoni.

Dhoni had handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad a day before the opening match of IPL 2024. Gaikwad has not performed poorly as a captain and batsman but CSK could not make it to the IPL playoffs. Dhoni’s future in IPL remains a subject of debate as he has left everyone guessing. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020.

De Villiers had called the change in captaincy at the beginning of the season a mistake and on Wednesday also he stood by his statement.
He said, “I will give you the answer only when you tell it in the right way.” I did not call it a mistake, what I meant to say was that if MS Dhoni is playing and after playing against him for so many years, I would say that it is intimidating to see him as the captain of the rival team. ,

De Villiers said, “Therefore, by not making him the captain, the reason for CSK’s fear was reduced a little. This has nothing to do with Gaikwad’s captaincy. I think he has a bright future and he has captained very well. He said, “His team played well in most of the matches but they could not qualify for the knockouts. This is not at all because of Gaikwad’s captaincy. But I feel that if MS Dhoni is in the team then he should remain the captain. ,
