Hyderabad is no longer the common capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

The Uncut

Hyderabad. Hyderabad, one of the busiest metros of the country, is no longer the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from Sunday. According to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014, Hyderabad will be the capital of Telangana only from June 2. At the time of division of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, Hyderabad was made the joint capital of both the states for 10 years. Telangana came into existence on June 2, 2014.

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act states, “As from the appointed date (June 2), Hyderabad in the existing State of Andhra Pradesh shall be the common capital of the State of Telangana and the State of Andhra Pradesh for a period of 10 years.” It states, “After the expiry of the period specified in sub-section (1), Hyderabad shall be the capital of the State of Telangana and there shall be a new capital for the State of Andhra Pradesh.” The state of Telangana was formed on June 2, 2014 after the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill was passed in Parliament in February 2014. The formation of Telangana state had been a demand for decades.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy last month asked officials to take over buildings like the Government Guest House Lake View in Hyderabad after June 2, which were given to Andhra Pradesh for a period of 10 years. Even ten years after the bifurcation, several issues like division of assets between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are still unresolved.
