Bijapur. A 22-year-old youth was injured in an IED blast allegedly carried out by Naxalites in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Sunday, police said. The Naxalites had planted the pressurized improvised explosive device (IED) in advance. An official said that the blast occurred when the victim (Madvi Nanda, a resident of Chutwai village) was going towards Tarrem on his tractor.

He said Nanda stopped near Toynala village between Chutwai and Gundam where road construction work was going on. He said that after this he went to the side of the road to urinate and his foot stepped on a ‘pressure IED’ which exploded and he suffered serious injury in his leg. He said that a team of security personnel brought the victim to Chinnageluru camp, where he was given initial treatment.

He said that he was later admitted to Bijapur District Hospital. Naxalites plant IEDs on roads, under-construction roads and kutcha roads to target security personnel patrolling the interior areas of Bastar region. According to the police, five people have died in IED blasts in Bijapur district in the last two months.
