Bijapur: Security forces have arrested nine Naxalites in Chhattisgarh’s Naxal-affected Bijapur district, one of whom had a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head. Police officials gave this information on Wednesday. Police officials said that security forces arrested nine Naxalites in separate operations in Farsegarh and Maddeed police station areas.

He said that among the arrested Naxalites was Lachu Punem (35), a member of the Maddeed Area Committee, who had a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head. Police officials said that as part of the anti-Naxal operation, DRG forces were dispatched from Maddeed police station area and when the team was on the road between Somanpalli and Bandepara, four Naxalites trying to plant landmines were caught from there.

He said that explosives, backpacks and other items were recovered from the naxalites who were caught. Police officials said that in another incident, security forces arrested five naxalites from near Kuprel and Mandem villages in Farsegarh police station area who were involved in blowing up the vehicle of Farsegarh police station in-charge by detonating a landmine on May 15. The vehicle was damaged in this explosion and the police station in-charge had a narrow escape.

He said that the arrested Maoists used to plant landmines, collect levy, block roads and put up banners in the area. Officials said that the campaign against Naxalites is continuing in the area.
