What is the history of World Food Safety Day

World Food Safety Day was created on 18 December by the United Nations General Assembly in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. This day was celebrated for the first time on 7 June 2019. The purpose of celebrating this day was to draw attention to the need for food safety along with achieving goals related to health, hunger and agriculture.

Why is World Food Safety Day important?

Food safety is a fundamental right of the general public. Dirty and unsafe food contains harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites and chemicals which can cause about 200 diseases. These include diarrhea to cancer. According to the World Health Organization, about 6 million people fall ill every year after eating contaminated food. At the same time, about four lakh twenty thousand deaths have also occurred due to contaminated food.

Foodborne illness affects a wide range of populations, from children to pregnant women, the elderly and those with poor health.
